Amazon Echo Show vs Google Nest Hub: Which Smart Display Should Be in Your Home?

Unlike the first-generation Echo Plus, the second-generation Plus has a temperature sensor. This allows for more advanced commands related to the temperature in your home. For instance, you could have the fan turn on when the temperature reaches 75 degrees, for instance. As both systems are powered in the cloud, it also means that the situation is rapidly changing, with new features coming online all of the time.

With Google Home Hub, you can make calls through Duo, a video calling and messaging app owned by Google. Because the Home Hub doesn’t have a camera, you can’t use it to have a true two-way video call, although Google notes that you can use the camera on your connected phone or tablet. If that’s the case, however, there’s no need to use the Home Hub at all. Alexa, on the other hand, relies on the installation of skills – individual, app-like sets of related voice commands focussing on certain topics or abilities. Handled and activated through the Alexa app on smartphones, these can range from getting information on local transport times, or to activating voice-controlled games. The ZigBee hub built right into the smart speaker allows you to connect and control hundreds of products without having to deal with a myriad of clunky apps or installing an extra hub somewhere.

The best speaker for whole-house music

However, in our time with the device, we didn’t actually find much use for that feature. This powerful speaker can also work with a Sonos multiroom audio system and be controlled by voice using either Alexa or Google Assistant. If you still aren’t sure, think about your planned uses for your smart speaker and check our chart below to see which capabilities match up most with your interests.

The number of megapixels determines the resolution of the images captured with the main camera. A higher megapixel count means that the camera is capable of capturing more details. However, the megapixel count is not the only important element determining the quality of an image. AptX is a codec used for transmitting audio wirelessly with Bluetooth.

In countless hours of testing, Google Assistant attempts to answer more questions, offers a bit more contextual information, and usually gives a longer answer than Alexa almost every time. The Google Home app is used mostly for setup, though you still need to access it for things like shopping lists. The best Google Home accessories include smart locks by August, Nest thermostat, Philips light bulbs, and the SmartThings hub. When looking at the physical features on the device, the Echo Show has more to offer.

This comes down to the way that the Skill was created by the manufacturer. On simple information searches, Google Assistant attempts to answer more questions, offers a bit more contextual information, and usually gives a longer answer. The Echo Show comes with a web browser that you can launch using your voice, although you need to put your fingers on the screen to go further. It has faster transfer rates and improved security compared to its predecessors – a, b, and g.

Prices gone down

They have big screens for video chat, TV, or recipes, and great speakers, too. It costs $229 (£219, $349), similar to the original price of the 10-inchLenovo Smart Display. These smart displays are ideal for making Google Duo video calls to friends and family members. Pricing for smart displays is pretty straightforward, and matches the sizes of the devices. The Echo Show 10 and Echo Show 15 are the most expensive models at $250 each, slightly pricier than the $230 Nest Hub Max, followed by the Echo Show 8 at $130, then the sub-$100 Echo Show 5 and Nest Hub.

The Echo Show 10 is unique among these models with its motorized base that can rotate the screen to follow you as you use it. After spending some time testing it, I was surprised at how intuitive and useful the feature is. The other smart displays require you to stand in a specific area if you want to see the screen, while the Echo Show 10 automatically moves to follow you throughout the room. For the midrange models, the Echo and Nest Audio sound similar, with generally good audio quality that can easily fill a room. The Nest Audio lacks a bit of bass, while the Echo doesn't have much treble finesse, but both still offer high-quality sound considering their size and price. If you use any stand-alone Echo device (non-Plus), you’ll be able to use Alexa skills to perform some basic functions on your compatible smart devices.

Google Nest Mini (2nd Generation)

Besides simply streaming videos from those services, both smart displays can show useful information like weather reports and sports scores, step-by-step recipes, and other handy graphical and video content.. Echo models take sound quality to another level with Dolby speaker technology, but is there any difference in the audio hardware inside these two models? Again, there used to be — but now the two are identical in this area, too.

In-depth and hands-on reviews & test reports of products, headphones, beauty, home & kitchen, gadgets, consumer electronics. The Echo Show 10 has a 10.1-inch touch screen with 1,280-by-800-pixel resolution. The Nest Hub Max has a comparable display that's just a fraction of an inch smaller , with the same resolution. The Echo Show 5 and Nest Hub are both much smaller, respectively featuring 5.5-inch, 960-by-480 and 7-inch, 1,024-by-600 screens.

Most recently, Google released the Nest Hub Max, putting Google Assistant in a 10-inch smart display. It's the first product to come out under the converged brand name of Google and smart home security brand Nest. As an example you can simple control the Philips Hue lights or a smart lock directly to the Echo Plus, without having to set up a bridge or third-party smart-home hub first. Ofcourse I can’t say that the new Echo Plus beats the Sonos One, however at this price point you get a decent smart speaker empowered by Alexa for your home entertainment needs.

Both sport a 3-inch woofer and 0.8-inch tweeter inside a design made for 360-degree sound, and it works very well. We were impressed with the sound upgrade that the Echo Plus received when it first came out, so it comes as no surprise the 3rd-gen Echo copied the same audio system. The discontinued Google Home Max was easily the loudest first-party smart speaker out there, but it's no longer available. Now, the Echo Studio is by far the strongest in terms of sound quality, with powerful audio and the ability to fill a room with directional sound thanks to its angled drivers.

Among the smart displays that do include a webcam, some lack a physical shutter to cover the camera. The Echo Show 8, however, has both, which does mitigate privacy concerns somewhat. The upside, of course, is that you can video chat with the Echo Show 8, which you can't do on the Nest Hub. This gives a similar level of smart device control as with the Alexa app, letting you toggle lights or control a smart thermostat.

Now this reduces so much complications as well as save some cost of buying a separate smart hub. The Echo Plus does significant job using woofer and twitter tuning, delivering definite treble to bass combination. The powerful woofer in Echo Plus delivers an impressive audio quality in comparison to the Echo, perfectly suitable for the living room. So no need to spend more money to get hands on Plus only to add smart-home control. Alexa has more robust third-party support, with thousands ofskillsthat can be enabled to perform specific tasks, like ordering a pizza ortelling a story.

Best for video: Tie

The Echo Show 5 and Nest Hub win out as the most compelling smart displays under $100 , but the Echo Show 8 offers the best combination of size, power, and price. The Echo Show 10, meanwhile, is the most expensive, but also the most interesting thanks to its motorized tracking. The Nest Hub lacks a camera, but you can still accept video calls and use voice chat. The Nest Hub Max is the only first-party Google smart display capable of making full video calls, both sending and receiving video. You can make Google Duo calls to other Google users with either smart display, and join both Google Meet and Zoom conference calls with the Nest Hub Max.
