While most of the first film takes place in Massachusetts and Chicago, the second starts in Mexico. The Plaza runs a Home Alone package at Christmas which will set a family of four back about £2,600 for one night. The 1990 film was a hit with millions as Kevin McCallister, played by Macaulay Culkin, booby trapped his house to deal with the world’s worst burglars, played by Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern. Jack Grealish has taken to Instagram to share his love for Christmas and reveal his obsession with the Home Alone movies. He achieved more critical acclaim for the role of Roman Roy in Succession - a HBO black comedy based on the inner workings of a family of media moguls.

Instead, the movie-within-a-movie was created specifically for “Home Alone.” The 80-second clip was shot inside an abandoned high school in early 1990, at the beginning of the movie’s production, as Vanity Fair reported in 2015. Venetian blinds were added to give the scene its signature film noir touch. According to Bustle, the prop was a real edition of Playboy from 1989, so the crew may have taped everything else so that Macaulay Culkin wouldn't see any inappropriate content while they filmed the scene. Now, I'm not saying that the burglars could ever recruit Kevin to a life of crime, but perhaps Home Alone is a statement of the opposite.
You Won’t Find Home Alone’s Movie Within A Movie Anywhere Else
The Netflix Movies that Made Us episode actually has a whole segment dedicated to Joe Pesci's propensity for swearing, complete with a bleeped out montage of examples from other films. Chris Columbus advised against such language, especially in the presence of Macaulay Culkin, which led to Harry’s incoherent Yosemite-Sam-like rambles through his pain in Home Alone’s finished cut. In the same year in which Home Alone was released, Joe Pesci turned in an Academy Award-winning performance in Martin Scorsese’s mob masterpiece Goodfellas. Christopher Columbus wasn’t the only one to almost miss out on the success of Home Alone.
A second remake of a 1974 Canadian film, starring Imogen Poots, Aleyse Shannon, Lily Donoghue and Brittany O'Grady, this slasher film about sorority sisters fighting off a stalker takes a stab at feminist themes. The film follows a group of people living near the Korvatunturi mountain who discover the secret behind Santa Claus. When Kevin and Mr. Marley talk in the church, the heavy, white bandage on his hand has been replaced with a smaller, tan one.
I recreated Kevin’s brutal Home Alone traps - and was horrified by the results
Kevin then watches Marley reuniting with his son, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter. Jamie Lee Curtis and Tim Allen star as a married couple who decide not to celebrate the holidays for once in Christmas With the Kranks. Things all change, however, when their daughter decides to visit last minute, and they must rush around to make the perfect day. Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas features the iconic graveyard scene where Jack Skellington, voiced by Chris Sarandon, reveals he is depressed about celebrating Halloween and wants to experience something else. In one scene Charlie Brown, who is feeling dejected about the festive season, asks his friends if any of them even know the true meaning of Christmas.
Throughout "Home Alone," Kevin watches a black-and-white film called "Angels With Filthy Souls" and later uses it as part of his defense plan against the Wet Bandits. In certain kitchen shots, there's a decorated gingerbread house visible on the counter. Before loading up into the vans to go to the airport, Kevin's oldest cousin takes a quick headcount of her siblings and cousins. Like writer John Hughes' "The Breakfast Club,""Sixteen Candles," and "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," "Home Alone" is set in the Chicagoland area — which is clear from the mention of a Chicago airport and the Chicago Bulls decor in Buzz's room.

Now guests can watch 34 Lifetime movies on a loop at the “It’s a Wonderful Lifetime House’ in Connecticut in New England. Set in the late 30s, the comedy stars Ralph who really, really wants Santa to bring him a Red Ryder BB gun. THEY are the magical backdrops to the most iconic Christmas movies ever.

But no one ever comes by the house to water them, which seems like something the family should've planned for before they left for the trip. In the rush of trying to get to the airport on time, she accidentally counts a neighbor boy — who is curiously climbing through the van — which brings her total to the correct number even though Kevin is still sleeping in the attic. The night before Kevin's family leaves for their trip, everyone is busy finishing up packing, eating dinner, and finalizing their plans — which results in a lot of chaos. "Home Alone" is set near Chicago, like many other John Hughes movies.
This family comedy looks a bit different when considering its behind-the-scenes history. From almost ending up in development hell to nearly leaving brave stuntmen in the hospital, we can safely call Home Alone a bonafide Christmas miracle that remains the peak of Macaulay Culkin’s career as well as a timeless holiday classic. 'TIS the season to remember the child stars of one of the greatest Christmas films ever. It was praised for its quotable phrases, morals, traps, and main character. Hannah-Rose Yee of Stylist called the ending "very sweet" and praised the score from John Williams, calling it "fantastic". Christopher Hooton of The Independent also praised the film, calling the film-within-a-film Angels with Filthy Souls "a fond footnote in cinema history".
Looking back, it’s easy to imagine that Warner Bros. was kicking themselves after seeing Home Alone’s box office returns. Of course, their confidence in the project was made clear from the start with the initial budget. In fact, it was the charming young actor’s performance in John Hughes’ Uncle Buck that contributed to his idea to write a film carried entirely by a child protagonist.
Julio Macat, the films cinematographer, considers Home Alone his favorite film out of all the projects he has shot. Home Alone grossed $285.8 million in the United States and Canada and $190.9 million in other countries for a worldwide total of $476.7 million, against a production budget of $18 million. Christmas isn’t Christmas without this festive feel-good movie which sees a young kid left all alone as his family jet off on holiday. Naomi Barnwell of Roobla said that "Home Alone has all the ingredients that make for a great kids’ film". On the set, Pesci and Stern both had difficulty refraining from cursing, which became annoying to Pesci, since Culkin was on set as well. Pesci's use of "cartoon cursing", or menacing gibberish, garnered comparisons to Looney Tunes character Yosemite Sam. John Candy was available for only one day to film his scenes, which took 23 hours to shoot. In return, he was the only actor Hughes allowed to go off-script; according to Columbus, all his dialogue was improvised.
She married fellow actor Russell Soder in 2005 and the couple has one child together. Played by Mike C. Maronna, the 45-year-old now works behind the cameras - as a lighting technician on films. Now 45, she is a married full-time mum to two sons and a published author of The Not So Zen Mom. After stepping out of the spotlight, he made a return to show business starring in Seth Green's directorial debut Changeland - which was released in 2019. At the height of his fame, the now 42-year-old was labelled the most successful child actor since Shirley Temple, but his younger years were troubled. Home Alone and its sequel, Lost In New York, made Macaulay Culkin a household name.

Speaking of pain, Home Alone is best known for the unlikely suffering of Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern’s characters at the hands of Kevin McCallister and his potentially lethal traps. These darkly humorous moments of anguish are so convincing is because many of the stunts are very much real. John Hughes had initially hired Chris Columbus to direct his 1989 holiday-themed comedy National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, but after butting heads with star Chevy Chase, Columbus asked to be removed from the project. The understanding Hughes sent Columbus the script for Home Alone, which he immediately fell in love with. The budget on Home Alone rose to $17 million after Fox took over the project.

Instead, Buzz’s girlfriend was actually the son of the film’s art director Dan Webster made up to look like a girl. In another case of using movie magic to avoid harm, there is a surprising secret behind one of Home Alone’s cruder jokes. When Macaulay Culkin’s Kevin finds a picture of his brother Buzz’s girlfriend, he scoffs in disgust at how unattractive she is. Of course, some people were spared, such as Joe Pesci, whose head was made into a fake recreation for the scene in which a blowtorch lights Harry on fire.
